TCS Hosts HackNJIT to Support Students Development in Tech

From November 3-4, TCS was the Gold Sponsor for HackNJIT, a school wide hackathon organized by New Jersey Institute of Technology’s (NJIT) Ying Wu School of Computing in Newark, NJ. During this 24 hour coding competition, students worked in groups to create new and innovative technologies to improve their communities or develop a digital solution to a global challenge.

At the event, Dan Shick, TCS Program Manager for Digital Initiatives, and two recent NJIT grads helped to mentor students. Having students connect with alumni helps build credibility, build brand awareness and promote TCS as an employer of choice.

The TCS team also delivered a Tech Talk, "Do it Yourself IOT," to a room full of technology students. The discussion taught students how to connect everyday smart devices together and control them remotely.

During the Tech Talk, TCS challenged select groups of students to help us automate our Grow+ community garden in Cincinnati, OH. Produce from the garden is donated to the HealthSource of Ohio Foundation to support families facing food insecurity.

Students proposed mobile dashboards and data driven analytics pages to help farmers grow more crops. The solutions the students developed not only worked for our garden, but could be implemented at larger farms as well.

TCS was very impressed with what the students achieved in only 24 hours and are looking forward to applying some of the student-developed tech to our garden and partner organizations!
